Dublin: The unrelenting cold snap continues to disrupt daily life across Ireland, with snow, fog, rain, and strong winds affecting the nation for over two weeks. Today, 15 counties remain under an Orange Alert due to plunging temperatures, while Met Éireann forecasts that the extreme cold will persist, particularly in northwestern regions.
Weather Update and Outlook
Although the northwest continues to endure the harshest winter conditions, some signs of relief are emerging. Temperatures may rise to 11°C in certain areas, and Met Éireann has predicted snowfall in the southwest today. Rain is also expected in the southwest this morning, extending to parts of Leinster and Connacht later in the afternoon. This precipitation is expected to bring slightly milder conditions, with temperatures ranging from 6°C to 10°C in parts of Munster.
Yesterday, rainfall subsided in many areas, including Dublin. While the Orange Alert for Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Cavan, and Monaghan has been lifted, a nationwide Yellow Alert remains in place until this afternoon. However, widespread cold winds, snow, and black ice are expected to persist through this morning, leading to hazardous travel conditions.
Coldest Temperatures Recorded
Last night, temperatures plummeted to record lows in several regions:
- Granard, Longford: -8.2°C
- Mullingar, Westmeath: -7.5°C
- Athenry, Galway: -7°C
- Oak Park, Carlow: -6.7°C
Infrastructure and Public Services
Efforts to restore water and power supplies are ongoing, with ESB Networks reporting that only around 200 customers remain without electricity. The utility service noted that approximately 4,500 customers in Tipperary, Limerick, and Kerry continue to face water supply disruptions, with restoration efforts prioritised in these areas.
Keith Leonard, the National Director of Emergency Management, stated that significant progress has been made, with power supply issues expected to be fully resolved today. However, restoring water supplies and clearing some roads for safe passage will require additional time.

While many schools are reopening, some remain closed due to local conditions. Authorities are optimistic that the education system will return to normal by the end of the day. Road conditions remain treacherous, and motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists have been urged to exercise extreme caution.

Emergency accommodations have been arranged for refugees and those affected by the cold weather through the Irish Protection System Accommodation Service (IPSAS).
