Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s funeral at St. Peter’s Basilica; The entire world is preparing to pay their final respects

Vatican City: The final phase of the funeral services of Pope Benedict XVI today. The funeral service will be presided over by Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica. The services will begin at 9.30 a.m. in Italy (2 p.m. Indian time). According to Vatican sources, all ceremonies will be simple at Pope Benedict’s request.

The funeral services will be attended by 400 bishops and 4,000 priests. The ceremony will be attended by the heads of state of 13 countries, including Italy, Germany, and Belgium.

Millions of people have paid their respects to the body, which has been on display at St. Peter’s Basilica since Monday. Over 1.30 lakh people visited St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday alone. On December 31, around 9.34 a.m., the Pope died at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican.

He was the oldest pope ever elected. Benedict XVI was the first Pope since Gregory XII in 1415 to resign. From 2005 to 2013, he led the Catholic Church. He is the only pope in modern times to have abdicated.
