Prime Minister hinted that a housing and water referendum will be held in January

Dublin: The government will hold a referendum on housing and drinking water issues. Prime Minister Micheal Martin stated in the dail that a referendum will be held on January 1st.

The Prime Minister made the comments in response to Independent TD Joan Collins’ call for a referendum on water ownership before local authority staff are transferred to Irish Water.

The relocation, according to TD, will take place within five weeks. She went on to say that the workers now want a referendum. The prime minister said there should be no doubt that water will remain in public ownership.

The opposition says that the government has failed on housing issues.

At the same time, the opposition in the Dáil criticised the Martin government for its “complete failure” to address housing issues.

“The number of homeless people is at a record high,” said Catherine Murphy, deputy leader of the Social Democrats. The housing emergency is a tragedy. Murphy claims that the children who live here are losing their childhood. All hope has been lost. Only bankers can afford to live in Ireland. Rent in Dublin costs €28,000 a year.

The prime minister, however, denied the allegations. According to the Prime Minister, the number of first-time home buyers in the country has increased to 16,000 in a year. Martin said it was the highest figure since 2007. Housing Minister Dara O’Briain said a plan to deal with apartment building defects would be in Cabinet before Christmas.
