Qualcomm Technologies Invests $127 Million in Cork R&D Facility, Creating Over 150 High-Skilled Engineering Roles
Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of wireless technology company Qualcomm, is set to invest $127 million in expanding its research and development facility in Cork City. The substantial investment aims to bolster the skills and capabilities of the subsidiary and address market challenges across various industries. The Penrose Dock facility will host hardware and software research teams as part of this initiative.
The expansion is expected to create over 150 highly skilled engineering roles within the next four years, according to Qualcomm. Recruitment efforts are already underway for many of these positions, noted Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment Simon Coveney, TD. Job listings on Qualcomm’s Careers page include roles such as systems software engineer, computer science engineer, and machine learning verification engineer.
Minister Coveney highlighted the project’s focus on digital transformation, bringing together QT Technologies Ireland’s R&D, hardware, and software teams in Cork. Qualcomm, headquartered in California, initially established its presence in Cork in 2013 and announced plans in 2020 to invest €78 million in developing the Cork R&D facility.
Paul Kelleher, Engineering VP with QT Technologies Ireland, emphasised that the expansion would enable digital transformation across various industries, including manufacturing, automotive, hyperscale computing, gaming, medical, and education. The project enjoys support from the Irish Government through IDA Ireland, with the state agency’s CEO, Michael Lohan, stating that the investment will elevate the strategic functions of the Cork facility and enhance the established tech cluster in the south-west of Ireland.
