Dublin: The current upper age limit for joining the Garda could be raised significantly, according to indications.
The current maximum age for joining the Garda is 35 years. The new upper age limit is expected to be between 45 and 50 years old. Aside from permanent personnel for patrolling and stationing, the force requires additional personnel in a variety of specialist categories.
Garda sources have confirmed that a final decision on the age limit is expected within weeks.
The new age limit is expected to come into effect before the next recruitment campaign in a few months. However, the level of physical fitness required will not change.
The current requirement is that those who join the Garda must be proficient in two languages. One of them must be Irish or English. However, the new rule requires only one language’s proficiency. The Department of Justice believes that this decision will benefit those who were not born in Ireland and do not speak Irish.
