Report Warns of Growing Skills Gap in Ireland’s ICT Sector; Nearly 90,000 New Roles Needed by 2030
Dublin: Addressing future skills shortages in Ireland’s technology sector will be a major challenge for the country, according to a new report published by Scale Ireland, the representative body for Irish tech startups and scaling companies.
The report warns that the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) sector will require approximately 89,590 new professionals by 2030 to meet growing demand. While Ireland continues to perform well in producing ICT graduates, the report notes that current output will not be sufficient to meet future workforce needs.
It stresses that reskilling and upskilling existing workers will be critical to sustaining the country’s competitiveness. The report also recommends that alternative pathways into the ICT workforce, such as apprenticeships and industry-led training programmes, should receive greater policy attention and investment.
Dependence on International Talent
Ireland’s ICT sector continues to rely heavily on migrant professionals, with foreign workers accounting for around 40% of total employment in the industry.
The report highlights significant opportunities in high-demand areas, including software development, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. It also urges the government to strengthen its strategy for attracting and retaining global talent through improved visa pathways and international partnerships.
Strong Indian Presence in the ICT Workforce
According to official data, over 38,000 foreign workers were granted employment permits in Ireland in 2024, with a majority of them being Indian nationals. This underscores India’s growing contribution to Ireland’s digital economy and workforce.
The study concludes that sustained investment in lifelong learning, upskilling, and reskilling initiatives is essential for Ireland to remain a leading European technology hub.
