RTE Issues Directive Against Pro-Palestinian Clothing and Symbols on Shows

Dublin: Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTE, has instructed participants appearing on its shows not to wear pro-Palestinian clothing or display related signs. This directive was issued to the Irish Women in Harmony group, who were slated to pay tribute to Sinead O’Connor on the Late Late Show last Friday.

Several artists within the group had intended to wear clothing featuring slogans such as “Gaza” and symbols of support for Palestine, including badges. However, RTE authorities prohibited the display of such attire and accessories.

RTE confirmed that musicians were similarly instructed to refrain from wearing Palestinian clothing or accessories during their performances on the talk show.

Critics have accused RTE of adopting a pro-Palestinian stance, alleging that some media personnel receive incentives to promote religious attire and that financial arrangements lead to disproportionate representation of certain religious groups, despite their small population size.

In response, RTE defended its stance, citing guidelines of neutrality governing costumes worn on its programmes. The broadcaster emphasised the importance of maintaining clear neutrality across all shows, particularly those addressing matters of public interest. RTE clarified that the tribute to Sinead O’Connor did not delve into the Gaza conflict, thus justifying the directive against wearing clothing with specific ideological viewpoints.

An RTE spokesperson reiterated the broadcaster’s commitment to fostering open debates on issues of public concern, underscoring the importance of refraining from displaying special badges, emblems, or signs during events intended to engage all segments of society.
