Sapporo Snow Festival 2023: Japan’s largest winter event is back!

SAPPORO – The annual Sapporo Snow Festival kicked off Saturday in Hokkaido’s capital, opening its venues to the public for the first time in three years and displaying 160 snow and ice sculptures.

The event, which dates back to 1950 and is one of Japan’s major winter festivals, has returned to an in-person format after being hosted virtually for the previous two years owing to the coronavirus outbreak.

Hokkaido is a popular location for overseas tourists. Every year, more than 2 million domestic and international tourists attend the snow festival, with a record 2.74 million attending in 2019.

A sculpture representing the Nippon Ham Fighters’ new baseball stadium, Es Con Field Hokkaido, stood roughly 12 metres tall at the main Odori site. The festival will take place at two locations in Sapporo through February 11.
