Security Forces Use Gunfire and Tear Gas to Disperse Protests Over Nigeria’s Severe Cost-of-Living Crisis; Two Fatalities Reported

On Thursday, August 1, security forces in Nigeria used gunfire and tear gas to disperse widespread protests against the nation’s severe cost-of-living crisis, resulting in at least two fatalities in Niger State.

Thousands of predominantly young demonstrators took to the streets across the country, with approximately 1,000 people peacefully marching in Lagos and hundreds more rallying in Maiduguri, Bauchi, and other regions.

The protests, labelled a “day of rage,” decried systemic corruption and poor governance amid soaring living costs, including 40 percent food inflation and tripled fuel prices. Branded as #EndbadGovernanceinNigeria, the movement gained significant traction online. Some instances of looting and vandalism were reported, prompting three state governors to impose curfews.
