Dublin: New data from the Central Bank reveals that Ireland’s mortgage market remains dominated by salaried employees, with only a small percentage of loans going to self-employed individuals. In 2023, salaried employees represented 96.3% of first-time buyer mortgages, a slight decrease from 96.9% in 2022. Meanwhile, the self-employed accounted for less than 4% of first-time buyer mortgages.
A spokesperson for the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland noted that this percentage may also include contract workers. However, when considering second-time homebuyers, the share of self-employed mortgage holders is notably higher, comprising 8.1% of approved loans in 2023, up from 7.3% in 2022.
