“Simon Harris Set to Take Office as Ireland’s 15th Prime Minister Today”

Dublin: Today, Simon Harris, leader of Fine Gael, is set to assume office as the fifteenth Prime Minister of Ireland. While the government holds a majority in the House with the support of 81 members, efforts are being made by Simon Harris to garner additional support from independents to enhance governance. Following the voting process in the Dáil, Simon Harris will meet with President Michael D. Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin, where the President will officially appoint him as Prime Minister. Subsequently, a cabinet meeting is expected to be convened.

Later in the day, the Dáil will reconvene at 5 p.m. to approve the election of new cabinet members through voting. The session will conclude at 7 p.m.

The reshuffle is anticipated to see the inclusion of three senior leaders into the new cabinet. This includes the appointment of ministers for higher education, previously held by Simon Harris himself, and enterprise, with Simon Cowen stepping down from consideration. Additionally, a new Minister for Special Education is needed following Josepha Madigan’s decision to step down.

Several senior party members are poised to receive new roles within the reshuffle. Peter Burke, TD for Longford-Westmeath and Minister of State for European Affairs; Jennifer Carol McNeill, TD for the Dunlary-Rathdown council area and Minister for Insurance; and Neale Richmond, Minister of State for Enterprise Neale Richmond are all expected to be promoted to cabinet positions. Richmond’s early support has notably contributed to his consideration.

Furthermore, the anticipated promotions of Joint Minister for Public Works Patrick O’Donovan and Cork-North Central TD Combe Burke are on the horizon.

In the realm of Special Education, Dublin Midwest TD Emer Higgins, known for her advocacy on equality, is under consideration to succeed Madigan.

While rumours persist regarding a potential reshuffle within the Justice Ministry under Minister Helen McEntee, Simon Harris has not yet disclosed his stance on this matter. However, he has hinted at Helen’s continuity within the new cabinet team.
