Sinn Féin and Opposition Voice Regret as House Owners Gain More Benefits Than Nurses

Dublin: In the Irish Parliament, a contentious debate has erupted regarding the tax credits granted to homeowners in the latest budget, igniting a war of words between political leaders.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald ignited the discussion by contending that the budget favoured homeowners over essential workers, particularly nurses. This assertion resonated with opposition parties, who joined Mary Lou in criticising the government’s stance.

In response to the opposition’s anger, Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin staunchly defended the tax breaks provided to landlords in the budget. He emphasised that within the scope of the €96 billion budget, the tax relief for landlords constituted a relatively modest portion.

The tax relief in question pertains to the initial €3,000 of rental income, with the government arguing that these incentives are aimed at retaining landlords in the rental market.

Ivana Basic, the leader of the Labour Party, pointed out the imbalance by stating that a part-time working student would end up paying more in taxes than a property owner who rents out their house. She emphasised the distinction between active income earned through labour and passive income derived from property ownership, which may include properties with mortgages already paid off.

Holly Keynes, leader of the Social Democrats, expressed her incredulity at the budget’s prioritisation of landlords over renters and first-time homebuyers.

Deputy Prime Minister Martin defended the government’s actions by highlighting a 50 percent increase in tenant tax credits, amounting to 750 euros. He stated that landlords would receive a minimum of €600 in the first year, increasing to €1,000 in subsequent years.

Recent surveys have indicated that several factors, including tax considerations, play a significant role in landlords exiting the rental market.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar underscored the need to support both tenants and landlords, asserting that every tenant should have a responsible landlord.
