Sinn Fin leader and TDs pay back increased salaries

DUBLIN: Sinn Féin leader, Mary Lou McDonald, returned an increased salary to Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe. Ms. McDonald has returned €10,200 to the finance minister.

Ms. McDonald has joined fellow party members in returning all salary rises given to TDs since 2017.

“I have not taken a pay increase of €10,200. This is a time of crisis. Workers and families are struggling. More money for TDs is just wrong,” Ms. McDonald said in a statement on Twitter. She posted alongside an image of her gift declaration to the Minister Paschal Donohoe.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein party member, David Cullinane announced last week that he would return the pay rise to the government. He said he would repay €10,203,70 he received from April 1, 2017.

At the same time, Mr. Cullinane said that the pay hike for TDs was unfair and that the government should be prepared to pay this amount to student nurses and midwives.

Political observers believe that Sinn Fin’s move will favor the party in the coming elections. It is reported that Sinn Fein will add between 25 – 30 extra candidates for the next election.
