Despite the fact that hundreds of ladies attended the famous Pongala celebration of the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), it is the image of one lady that has gone viral on social media. Sudha Murthy, a well-known educator, author, philanthropist, and holder of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan honours, attended the ceremony and served pongala (a sweet dish comprised of rice, coconut, and jaggery) to the god while sitting among thousands of women.
Despite her high prominence as the wife of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and mother-in-law of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Murthy went unnoticed by the mass of ladies around her due to her simplicity and lack of any VIP paraphernalia. Sudha Murthy was seen sitting on the bare floor beside the temple, making an offering beneath the burning heat, and the image quickly went viral, along with some lighthearted memes.
Murthy told the media that she was attending the Attukal Pongala celebration for the first time, which is known as the greatest gathering of women for a temple festival.
