Surge in Flu Cases; Creates Crisis in Hospitals

Dublin: Ireland is currently grappling with a surge in flu cases, leading to a critical situation in hospitals as they struggle to accommodate the increasing number of patients. The influx has resulted in a shortage of beds and delays in providing timely treatment, even prompting the postponement of surgeries. Over the weekend, approximately 300 patients were on trolleys in hospitals, with 375 surge-capacity beds being utilised to address the crisis.

In the first week of January alone, Ireland reported 2645 cases of flu, and the Health Service Executive (HSE) has issued a warning that the number of patients is expected to peak in the current week. Hospitals are facing challenges in anticipating and managing the surge in patients during the winter season. To alleviate the congestion, HSE has directed hospitals to maximize discharges over the weekends, a strategy endorsed earlier by the Health Minister.

Despite the HSE’s claims of progress in enhancing operational capacity and reducing trolley numbers over the past six months, Bernard Gloster, the head of the HSE, acknowledges the significant challenge posed by the substantial increase in lung diseases. Gloster notes that the rise in flu cases has created a unique situation, deviating from the trend of previous years where the issue of trolley numbers was not as prominently featured in the news during the new year.
