T20 World Cup 2021: India to face Pakistan in group stage, Ireland in Group A with Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Namibia

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the groups for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 on Friday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will host the mega event in Oman and the UAE from October 17 to November 14.

The teams have been split into four groups by the ICC based on their rankings as on March 20, 2021. The first round will feature an eight-team battle to qualify for the Super 12s. Group A includes Sri Lanka, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Namibia, while Group B includes Bangladesh, Oman, Papua New Guinea, and Scotland. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are

Two qualifiers from Round 1 will compete against Group 1 members, which comprises defending champions West Indies, former champions England, South Africa, and Australia. The other two Round 1 qualifiers will face former champions India and Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan.

“We are delighted to announce the groups for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. There are some great matchups offered by the groups and it starts to bring the event to life for our fans as our first multi-team event since the onset of the global pandemic draws closer,” said ICC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allardice.

The World Cup was originally scheduled to be held in India, but due to public health and safety concerns raised by COVID-19, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced the board’s decision to host in the UAE.
