Taoiseach announced that online registration for COVID-19 vaccine in Ireland will begin in mid-April

DUBLIN: Taoiseach Micheál Martin has announced that online registration for the COVID-19 vaccine will begin in Ireland in April. He said the website for registering for the COVID-19 vaccine would be available in the third week of April. The Taoiseach also said the Government aims to vaccinate 80 per cent of the adult population by the end of June.

Mr. Martin justified the move to redesign the vaccination priority list. He said the most vulnerable in society would get their jabs as “fast as possible”. The Taoiseach told the Dáil that age is the leading cause of death and serious illness from COVID-19.

The government confirmed the changes to the vaccination rollout plan after the most vulnerable people and those over the age of 70 had been vaccinated.

The decision was strongly criticised, including by teachers’ unions and the Garda representative union.

The Taoiseach mentioned that if those most at risk have been inoculated, the priority list will be removed and vaccinations will be provided based on age. He says the new system will allow older teachers and key workers to be vaccinated much more quickly. “There will be intense vaccination during the summer months,” he said.

He said the government plans to vaccinate 80% of adults by the end of June. “That is the target and, in fact, the European Union have a figure of 70 per cent that they’re hoping, on average, would be fully vaccinated by the end of July,” Mr Martin said.
