Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomes Joe Biden to Ireland

Prime Minister Michael Martin has invited newly elected US President Joe Biden to Ireland.

Michael Martin spoke with Biden on the phone and congratulated him and Vice President Kamala Harris. The prime minister says he has invited Biden’s wife, Jill, to Ireland.

Martin and Biden over the phone discussed the importance of the Good Friday agreement prior to Brexit and the removal of Ireland’s border.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said that a warm conversation had taken place between Prime Minister Michael Martin and Joe Biden and that Biden had shared his experience of visiting Ireland with his family in 2016.

“The President-elect reaffirmed his full support for the Good Friday Agreement and they discussed the importance of a Brexit outcome that respects the GFA ensures no return of a border on the island of Ireland,” she said.

The spokesperson said the two spoke about working together in a number of international areas, including EU-US relations and the UN-Security Council, as well as global challenges, including Covid’s economic recovery and climate change.

Meanwhile, Martin tweeted that Biden has a lot of knowledge and understanding about his new role and that he has a love for his Irish heritage.
