Taoiseach Simon Harris Condemns Galway Chaplain Stabbing as a “Shocking Incident”

Galway: Irish police are investigating a possible terrorism motive in the stabbing of a chaplain at an army barracks in Galway on Thursday. The victim, a man in his 50s, sustained several stab wounds and was hospitalised with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A teenage male suspect was arrested at the scene by defence forces.

The injured chaplain, Father Paul Murphy, later posted on Facebook, stating he was “doing okay” and awaiting surgery.

Taoiseach Simon Harris condemned the stabbing of a chaplain in Galway as a “shocking incident” and praised the defence forces and gardaí for their swift response. He emphasised the importance of allowing the gardaí to thoroughly investigate, noting that a serious line of inquiry is being pursued. Tánaiste and Defence Minister Micheál Martin highlighted the critical role of the soldiers on duty during the attack. Police confirmed they are investigating a possible terrorism motive, with the suspect in custody and their detention extended. Authorities reassured the public that there is no indication of a wider conspiracy.
