Teenagers facing high levels of sexual harassment; lack of proper sex education in Irish schools is to blame

DUBLIN: A new report has revealed that teenagers in Ireland are experiencing high levels of sexual harassment. The Rape Crisis Network Ireland reports that 80% of adolescents were victims of some form of sexual harassment last year.

The shocking reality of Irish kids’ welfare and safety was revealed in a study based on a survey of nearly 600 teenagers and interviews with 93 adolescents and 21 youth workers aged 13 to 17.

The participants were asked about their experiences during the last 12 months.

According to the findings, 24% of students surveyed had experienced violent or severe forms of sexual harassment, while 83% had witnessed some sort of sexual harassment.

More than 40% of teens reported experiencing sexual harassment online, while 12% reported experiencing it at school.

LGBT teenagers

The report found that LGBT teenagers face more sexual harassment than heterosexual teenagers, with over 70% of LGBT teens having experienced significant sexual harassment.

When compared to boys, girls were nearly two and a half times more likely to have suffered unwanted sexual touches. Girls are also twice as likely to be sexually assaulted online as boys.

Irish schools lack proper sex education

Gender inequality and a lack of proper sex education in Irish schools are to blame for the level of sexual harassment experienced by teenagers.

The study, published by Rape Crisis Network Ireland, recommends that sex education be improved in Irish schools and that measures be found to make it simpler for teens to report sexual harassment.
