Testers Warn ‘Rust’ Is a Major Cause of Vehicle Failures in National Car Test (NCT)

DUBLIN: Testers have issued a warning that rust is the primary reason vehicles fail the National Car Test (NCT). They emphasise that failing to identify this “hidden” issue can not only lead to test failure but also result in the gradual deterioration of the vehicle. Last year, 50% of the vehicles tested did not meet the required road quality standards.

While flat tyres, worn brakes, bad suspension, and steering problems are typically the main culprits, rust is a particularly insidious issue that often goes unnoticed. Rust in critical parts can compromise a car’s load-carrying capacity and overall safety. The NCT manual details where rust can occur and how it can damage vehicles.

Rust Awareness Campaign on Social Media

To raise awareness, testers have launched a special campaign on social media, highlighting the dangers of rust. A viral post describes how rust can silently eat away at a vehicle, growing and spreading while owners focus on more visible parts like the exterior, underbody, and wheel arches.

Rust is not just an unsightly problem but a hidden safety threat that can weaken essential parts of the vehicle. Addressing rust issues through undercar restoration services, which include rust removal, undercarriage repair, and repainting, is crucial as soon as rust is discovered.

The NCT also advises that replacing necessary parts, regardless of the cost, can significantly enhance the overall safety of the vehicle.
