The former partner appears in court charged with the murder of Brazilian women

Cork: An ex-partner has been remanded in custody in connection with the murder of a Brazilian woman in her Cork apartment. Miller Pacheco (29), his countryman and ex-boyfriend, was arrested in connection with the death of Bruna Fonseca (28), from Brazil. He is a Brazilian citizen who was remanded into custody by the Cork District Court. The court also ordered him to appear before Cork District Court again on January 9.

Bruna was discovered strangled in her Cork flat at No. 5 Liberty Street on New Year’s Day. The accused lived on the same street as well. On the day of the incident, the accused was arrested and questioned at Bridewell Garda Station.

He did not respond to any of the garda questions. In court, the defendant, who was dressed in black slacks and a black jumper, remained silent. He was granted free legal and medical assistance at the request of defence solicitor Aoife Buttimer, and the services of a Portuguese translator were secured for future hearings.

The murder occurred after New Year’s Eve.

Bruna was in Cork city centre with friends to celebrate the New Year. She was killed just a few hours later. The body was lying on the bed at 6.30 in the morning. In the meantime, the family is expected to arrive in Ireland to make arrangements for the body to be taken to Brazil. The Garda has assigned a family liaison officer to assist the family.

Bruna’s body was autopsied at Cork University Hospital (CUH). Although the post-mortem report has not been made public, it has been confirmed that she was brutally beaten and strangled to death.

Bruna Fonseca is a native of Formiga, Brazil. She graduated from a Brazilian university and worked as a librarian there. She came to Ireland last year for work. She worked at Mercy University Hospital and was employed by Bidvest-Noonan Contractor Cleaners. She was murdered nearby.
