The government has liberalised the work permit system in Ireland

Dublin: The government has announced major changes to the work permit system, beginning to address the shortage of skilled workers in the Irish labour market. The shortage of skilled workers in agriculture, transportation, and home care sectors is set to be addressed.

More job opportunities will be available in agriculture, transportation, and home care, and bus and coach drivers will be issued permits.

As per the new changes, dairy farm assistants, bus and coach drivers, and home carers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA), including India, will now be eligible for a work permit.

Employers will be able to apply for a work permit if they have not found a suitable candidate after 28 days of advertising. The government measures are expected to help ease the pressure on the dairy sector, which is struggling without workers.

In March 2022, a cross-departmental advisory group was formed to investigate home carers issues. The group will also set up mechanisms to address challenges in the private-public care sector and long-term residential facilities for the elderly.

To address the transportation sector’s recruitment issues, 1,500 employment permits for bus and coach drivers will be allocated.

Damien English, Minister of State for Labour, stated that the influx of non-EEA nationals would help fill a skilled worker shortage in the domestic economy. The current processing time for employment permits is three to five working days, per the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment.

Be cautious of job scammers.

Thousands of people are already in Ireland on dependant visas. The government has made it clear that they will only recruit foreign workers if they are unable to work.

At the same time, with each government announcement, many job recruitment firms and agents step in to ‘cheat’ the common applicants. The number of people who are caught and cheated by them is also increasing. The only way to get rid of them is to find and apply to authorised agencies.

Only one application is required! For work permits and emigration permission.

Government sources have stated that a single window system is being prepared for employment permits and emigration permission.

With the establishment of a single window system for employment permits and immigration permission (visa applications), a single application is sufficient for both purposes.

Those from outside the European Economic Area who wish to work in Ireland must first apply for a work permit through the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment. Also apply to the Department of Justice for immigration permission. This process is being simplified. As part of this, an interdepartmental working group has been formed. The new system will be implemented within six months based on the group’s recommendations.

The European Commission proposed a single-window procedure for work permits and immigration permits to the European Parliament and Council in April 2022. Based on this, the procedures are simplified.

Prime Minister-designate Leo Varadkar said the single-window system would make all interactions with businesses and the government as transparent and efficient as possible.

Justice Minister Heather Humphreys also said that it would be a new, user-friendly system that would make the process easier.
