The CONCACAF and CONMEBOL confederations announced on Friday that the 2024 Copa America will be held in the United States as part of a new strategic partnership that will include a jointly organised club tournament.
The South American confederation (CONMEBOL) will host the Copa America next year, which will include six invited teams from the CONCACAF (North Central America and Caribbean) zone.
It will be the second time South America’s most significant national team tournament has been staged in the United States, following a special commemorative edition in 2016, which included six CONCACAF nations.
On the women’s side, CONCACAF will invite four South American national teams to the 2024 W Gold Cup, which will be held in the United States for the first time this year.
CONMEBOL and CONCACAF also announced plans for a club tournament in 2024, with four clubs from each area qualifying through their current regional tournaments, the Copa Libertadores and the CONCACAF Champions League.
“CONMEBOL and CONCACAF are linked by history and passion.” Above all, they are bonded by a love of football and sports that is shared by all of America. According to a statement issued by CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez on Friday.
“We want this enthusiasm to lead to more and better competition, and we want football and its values to flourish and strengthen across the hemisphere.” CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani remarked, “This partnership will greatly benefit both Confederations and help the continuing expansion of men’s and women’s football in CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.”
