The World Bids Farewell to Pope Francis…
Vatican City: Pope Francis has been laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, located approximately four kilometres from the Vatican. A vast crowd of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pay their final respects to the late pontiff, with security measures significantly heightened to accommodate the immense turnout.
Special seating arrangements were made for world leaders, with 5,000 seats reserved for dignitaries attending the funeral. Leaders from more than 50 countries were present. Notably, seating was not organised alphabetically at first. Given Pope Francis’ Argentine roots, representatives from Argentina, including Prime Minister Javier Milei — despite his political differences with the Pope — were seated in the front row, followed by the Italian delegation.
Later, seating was arranged alphabetically in French, causing some logistical challenges. For instance, the Irish delegation was seated ahead of the English, and precedence was given to royalty over heads of government. Thus, kings and queens from Spain and Belgium, along with their respective heads of state, were seated ahead of presidents and prime ministers.
Ireland was represented by President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina, along with Prime Minister Micheál Martin and Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris. In his tribute, President Higgins remembered Pope Francis as a tireless advocate for the vulnerable, a champion for environmental stewardship, and a voice for global poverty eradication and migrants’ rights.
Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, leaves behind a profound legacy of compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice.
Preparations Begin for the Conclave
Following the funeral, preparations have begun for the conclave to elect a new pope. The process is being overseen by Irish-born Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who has assumed the role of Camerlengo — the official responsible for administering the temporal affairs of the Catholic Church and Vatican City during the interregnum.
Cardinal Farrell, born in Dublin in 1947, joined the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ in 1966 and has held several prominent positions within the Church. As Camerlengo, he is tasked with overseeing all financial transactions and administrative matters at the Vatican until a new pontiff is elected.
The Church now enters a period of reflection and transition as the College of Cardinals prepares to choose the next leader of the global Catholic community.
