Three-week-old baby in Northern Ireland in ICU with COVID-19

BELFAST: A three-week-old baby in Northern Ireland has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is in the intensive care unit. Health Minister Robin Swann has also confirmed this.

Earlier, there were reports that the virus was rapidly spreading in Northern Ireland due to the presence of a highly transmissible Delta variant, as well as the easing of restrictions. Patients, staff, and hospital management were equally under pressure. In the midst of it all, a new-born has been infected with the virus.

Health Minister said that the incident demonstrated that the virus does not discriminate based on age, gender, religion, or political beliefs. That’s why people are being encouraged to come forward and receive the vaccine, he added.

More people are going into intensive care which we haven’t seen previously and a younger cohort are needing that intensive support as well.

The Department of Health also revealed that more ICU beds have been allocated in Belfast in response to increased demand.
