Timeline for vaccination to be issued next week; HSE and Government with a clear plan

DUBLIN: With the government making it clear that the COVID-19 vaccine will be available to all ages from next week, the HSE and the Department of Health are creating a timeline.

It is estimated that one in every seven people is now fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The HSE said that although daily virus cases remain high in Ireland, significant levels of illness, hospitalisation and death are low.

HSE chief Paul Reid said that a timeline for vaccinating people of all ages in Ireland will be issued next week. This will help people in knowing when they are likely to be offered a vaccine. However, Mr. Reid said that it would be dependent on promised vaccine deliveries.

The HSE is awaiting official approval to begin administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to people over the age of 45 from next month. If the proposal is not approved, around 200,000 doses of the jab, which is currently confined to people over the age of 50, would be surplus. The HSE is awaiting the National Immunisation Advisory Council’s (Niac) recommendation.

The Government aims to vaccinate 80% of the population by the end of June. Accordingly, 2 million doses of vaccine are to be administered this week. Next week, between 260,000 and 280,000 vaccines will also need to be administered.

So far 650,000 people have registered for the vaccine on the online portal. About 33,000-35,000 are registering on a daily basis. On the first day, up to 28,000 people had signed up.
