Tiruppur Textile Hub Produces ‘Made in India’ Apparel for Paris Olympics, Thanks to Mother-Daughter Duo’s Back Bay India

As the Olympics prepare to kick off in Paris on July 26, the impact of the event is already being felt in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, thanks to Back Bay India, a company owned by the mother-daughter duo Deepa Jayan and Aishwarya. This textile hub is manufacturing apparel for the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) retail channels, with much of the “Made in India” apparel coming from their operations.

On Friday, Deepa and Aishwarya were finalising their last shipment of apparel to Paris, having already exported nearly one million pieces. Their products will be available at Olympic stadia and official retail outlets, with a portion supplied to volunteers. With 8.8 million tickets sold and a total of 13.5 million expected, Back Bay’s apparel is set to make a significant presence in Paris this season. The company will also supply the Paralympic Games, contributing to the IOC’s target of €2 billion in sales through its official channels.

Aishwarya, who took over the company’s operations after leaving her job at Goldman Sachs, noted that about 70% of their orders are for the Olympics and 30% for the Paralympics. The company, which her mother started in 2004, now operates six manufacturing units.

Their primary client for the Olympics is the French company Cotton Division, led by NRI businessman Sandeep Narayan. Back Bay India also supplied apparel for the Rugby World Cup in France in September 2023, under a contract awarded through the IOC’s official licensing programme. The IOC’s licensed products include a wide range of categories, with around 60 companies expected to develop 10,000 references featuring the Paris 2024 branding.

Aishwarya expressed ambitions to quadruple their revenue by 2030, emphasising the unique position of women-led textile manufacturing companies. Their focus has been mainly on apparel, though they have also supplied dresses for volunteers at several events.
