Tourism recovery at risk as 40,000 jobs vacancies revealed in the sector
Dublin: Ireland’s tourism and hospitality sectors are understaffed. According to Failte Ireland, there are 40,000 job openings in the tourism industry. The fact that 10,000 of these vacancies are only for kitchen staff adds to the depth of the crisis.
Due to a lack of staff, many businesses are unable to open every day of the week.
According to a Failte Ireland report, 88% of hospitality employers are having significant difficulty recruiting chefs.
The lockdown due to the COVID epidemic has thrown the hospitality sector into trouble. All of the employees in this industry have moved on. Many people left the field and pursued other careers. All of these factors have exacerbated the labour shortage.
However, it is widely believed that the 2003 merger of Bord Failte and the Council of Education, Recruitment, and Training (CERT) to form Failte Ireland sowed the seeds of the current chef shortage.
In the last 20 years, there has been very little training of chefs and trainee chefs, say those in the field. This field also has a low number of new entrants. There were more foreign workers than Irish workers in hotels. They all fled the country when the pandemic struck. Many people did not return. This is not a field that people in Ireland are interested in.
The Restaurants Association of Ireland’s chief executive, Adrian Cummins, confirms that there is a serious crisis.
According to IHF chief executive Tim Fenn, the RAI has been calling for the restoration of certification and chef training since 2017, but no action has been taken, so recruitment remains a challenge.
