Tragedy Strikes Northwest China: Over 127 Dead in 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake

In a devastating turn of events, a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake has claimed the lives of more than 127 people in northwest China. The seismic event, which caused extensive damage, including the collapse of houses, prompted citizens to seek refuge in the streets for safety, according to state news agency Xinhua. As rescue efforts are underway, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” in the search and relief operations, emphasising the importance of ensuring the safety of survivors and their property.

The earthquake, initially recorded as a magnitude of 5.9 by the US Geological Survey, struck in Gansu near the border with Qinghai, where Haidong is situated. The epicenter is approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of the capital of Gansu province, Lanzhou. Following the initial quake, several smaller aftershocks have been reported. The nation is now mobilising to address the aftermath, with a focus on providing support and assistance to those affected by this tragic natural disaster.
