Turkey – Syria Earthquake: Death toll inches closer to 40,000

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Tuesday that more than 35,000 people died in Turkey as a consequence of last week’s earthquake, making it the country’s biggest disaster since its founding 100 years ago.

While the death toll is probably certain to increase further, many of the tens of thousands of homeless survivors were still striving to meet basic necessities, such as seeking shelter from the brutal cold.
Confirmed deaths in Turkey surpassed those from the catastrophic Erzincan earthquake in 1939, which killed around 33,000 people.

Erdogan stated 105,505 people were injured as a result of the Feb. 6 earthquake in Kahramanmaras and its aftershocks. Nearly 3,700 deaths have been reported in neighbouring Syria, bringing the total death toll in both countries to more than 39,000.

The Turkish president, who has referred to the earthquake as “the disaster of the century,” has revealed that more than 13,000 people are currently being treated in hospitals.
Erdogan stated in Ankara after a five-hour Cabinet meeting at the headquarters of disaster agency AFAD that 47,000 structures, containing 211,000 dwellings, had been demolished or were severely damaged, necessitating destruction.

“We will keep working until our last person is rescued from the wrecked structures,” Erdogan declared of the continuing rescue attempts.

Aid organisations and governments were stepping up attempts to reach out to those in need in Turkey and Syria.
