Over 27,000 people in northeast China have been evacuated, and hundreds of factories were ordered to halt production as Typhoon Gaemi brought heavy rains, according to Xinhua news agency on Saturday.
The typhoon hit China’s coastal Fujian province on Friday with intense rains and strong winds, marking the most powerful storm to strike the country this year as it moved from the southeastern coast into the interior.
In Liaoning province, heavy rains caused water levels to rise in 40 reservoirs, with torrential rain expected from early Sunday to Tuesday. Hundreds of chemical and mining companies have suspended operations, and nearby residents have been relocated to mitigate flood risks.
The storm, which caused fatalities in Taiwan and worsened seasonal rains in the Philippines, has impacted nearly 630,000 people in Fujian province, with almost half being relocated, Xinhua reported.
