UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy Visits New Delhi to Strengthen UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has commenced his first official visit to New Delhi since taking office, with a mission to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the UK and India. His visit underscores the “living bridge” connecting the two nations, focusing on economic collaboration, domestic affairs, and global security.

Lammy’s agenda includes high-level discussions with Indian officials and leaders in the climate and business sectors to maximise the UK-India partnership’s potential. A key goal is advancing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to benefit both economies, highlighting India’s status as an emerging superpower with a rapidly growing economy. “Our FTA negotiations are just the beginning of our ambitions to unlock our shared potential and deliver growth, from Bengaluru to Birmingham,” Lammy stated.

Emphasising shared interests in green transition, new technologies, and global security, Lammy aims to reset the UK’s relationship with the Global South for enhanced security and prosperity. He seeks to galvanise climate action, viewing India as an essential partner in driving the clean energy transition and creating opportunities for businesses in both nations.

Lammy will visit India’s third-largest technology company and meet business leaders to promote joint ambitions in science, innovation, and trade. His discussions with Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, will highlight the significant contributions of the British Indian community and the vast potential of the UK-India partnership.

Following his India visit, Lammy will attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Laos to further UK economic partnerships and introduce new climate and health cooperation initiatives.
