Tipperary: In a significant development concerning the murder at a refugee hotel in Dunrum, Tipperary, Ivan Volkov, a 65-year-old disabled Ukrainian national, was brought before the court and subsequently imprisoned. Volkov, who relies on crutches for mobility, appeared with the assistance of an interpreter due to language barriers. He had been residing in Dunrum as a temporary refugee.
The incident in question occurred last week, when Volkov allegedly assaulted Shamil Nablev, a 69-year-old individual hailing from Azerbaijan. Despite Nablev’s subsequent admission to Tipperary University Hospital, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. Gardaí confirmed Nablev’s passing on Sunday and proceeded to arrest Volkov the following Saturday morning at 9:18 am in connection with the altercation. By 10 p.m. the same day, Volkov stood before the court to face charges, maintaining his innocence by asserting self-defence.
During proceedings, Volkov cited significant health issues and his reliance on weekly disability payments. Recognizing his financial constraints, he was granted free legal aid. Following the hearing, he was remanded in custody pending an appearance at Neenah District Court. While the Garda inspector indicated no objection to bail, Volkov’s legal representative, Philip English, opted not to seek bail immediately, deferring the decision for a later stage in the legal process.
