United States pays tribute to Charlie Kirk at memorial service
Washington: The United States on Friday paid tribute to Charlie Kirk, a close aide to President Donald Trump, who was shot dead while speaking at a public event earlier this month. Tens of thousands gathered at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, to honour, in a ceremony marked by grief, security, and political symbolism.
Addressing the packed stadium, President Trump described Kirk as a “martyr for American freedom” and said his killer had taken away “one of America’s brightest lights.” He praised Kirk as a devoted husband, father, son, Christian, and patriot, while candidly admitting they had disagreed on one matter. “Charlie never hated his opponents—he wanted the best for them. I wasn’t like that, and he was angry with me for it,” Trump told the crowd.
Kirk’s widow, Erica Kirk, also spoke at the ceremony, saying she had forgiven the man who murdered her husband. Trump acknowledged her words, underscoring her strength and the depth of her faith.
The memorial, held in the 63,000-seat stadium under heightened security, was attended by senior administration officials and right-wing leaders, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump’s Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and conservative commentator Tucker Carlson. Trump advisor Stephen Miller told the audience, “Did you think you could kill Charlie Kirk? All you did was immortalise him.”
The event was organised by Turning Point USA, the conservative youth movement Kirk founded, which is now being led by his widow.
Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 while addressing students at the University of Utah. Police arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson within 33 hours of the incident. Robinson admitted he targeted Kirk because of his outspoken criticism of transgender people, Muslims, and other.. —an admission that has since ignited fierce political debate and controversy across the country.
