US approves single dose COVID-19 vaccine; J&J vaccine is expected to arrive in Europe next month
DUBLIN: The US government approves Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine. The decision was made to give the vaccine to millions of Americans in the coming weeks. The US has previously approved Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, both of which require two doses.
The US Food and Drug Administration has unanimously approved the vaccine for all people over the age of 18. The drugs are expected to reach vaccination centers today. The US will initially purchase 100 million J&J vaccine doses in the first phase.
The European Union is reviewing the J&J vaccine. The vaccine is expected to be delivered by April. The J&J vaccine has been shown to be 66% effective in combating severe and new viruses following approximately 44,000 trials. The company says the vaccine is 100% effective in preventing hospitalization and death due to COVID-19.
It is estimated that the J&J vaccine will be in high demand as it can be stored in the refrigerator at normal temperatures.
