Violence Erupts in Citywest as Protest Over Child Assault Turns Chaotic
Dublin: A protest in Citywest, Dublin, over the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old Irish girl escalated into violence in the evening, with demonstrators setting fire to a Garda van and clashing with police outside the International Protection Applicants Centre (IPAS).
Around 2,000 protesters gathered outside the facility, chanting slogans and demanding the expulsion of refugees following the incident. Gardaí deployed a large contingent of officers, including members of the Public Order Unit, to prevent demonstrators from entering the centre.
Witnesses reported that sections of the crowd threw stones and firecrackers at Gardaí, with several officers sustaining minor injuries. Many protesters had their faces covered and were seen attempting to push through police lines.
Authorities confirmed that no arrests had been made as of night and that there were no reports of serious injuries. Gardaí are continuing efforts to disperse the crowd and secure the area.
Transport Disruptions
Public transport in the area has been disrupted. Luas announced that its Red Line service between Belgard and Saggart was suspended “in accordance with Garda instructions.” Roads around Garter Lane and Citywest have also been temporarily closed.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the violence, calling the scenes “unacceptable”.
“The scenes of public disorder in Citywest today must be condemned. This is not acceptable, and Gardaí will take strong action. Those responsible will be brought to justice,” the minister said.
He added that many of those involved were “outsiders” and did not represent the people of Saggart or Citywest.
