Water Restrictions Likely Amid Ongoing Supply Challenges
Dublin: Utility officials have issued a warning that additional nighttime water restrictions may be necessary as frozen reservoirs continue to impact Ireland’s water supply network. The sub-zero temperatures and subsequent snowmelt have caused widespread leaks and burst pipes, placing unprecedented strain on the system.
Record Water Demand in Dublin
In the Greater Dublin Area alone, approximately 25 major bursts and numerous smaller leaks occurred over the weekend, pushing water demand to record levels. These issues have significantly affected reservoir levels, with water service crews working throughout the weekend to address the damage and restore normal supply to customers, according to the water department.
Restrictions and Repairs
Nighttime water restrictions have already been implemented in several areas:
- Trim on Friday night
- South Leitrim on Saturday night
- Carna and Kilkieran on both Saturday and Sunday nights
The water utility, Uisce Éireann, has confirmed that reservoir levels remain critically low due to the high demand and the impact of leaks. As a result, further nighttime restrictions may be required in some areas to allow reservoir levels to recover.
Public Appeal
Margaret Attridge, Head of Water Operations, emphasised the importance of addressing leaks promptly. She urged homeowners and businesses to repair broken or leaking taps and to report any leaks in the network to expedite repairs.

Met Éireann has issued a new alert for sub-zero temperatures expected to return next week. While a temporary rise in temperatures is forecast due to clearer weather, snow and ice are anticipated to make a comeback, meteorologists have warned.
The combination of freezing conditions and melting snow continues to challenge Ireland’s infrastructure, with both utility providers and the public encouraged to remain vigilant.
