Wicklow International Airport: April Fool’s Day, Conspiracy?

Dublin: The recent report by the international media outlet ‘Business Post’ suggesting plans for an international airport in Wicklow near Arklow has been confirmed as an April Fool’s joke. Local representatives, TDs, and councillors expressed surprise and disbelief at the proposed project, claiming ignorance of such plans.

Despite initial confusion, Shane Desmond, a property consultant involved with the investors, disclosed that 600 acres of the required 800-acre site for the proposed East Leinster International Airport had been tentatively identified. He characterised the project as exciting but still in its early stages.

Contrary to the report, both the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) and Wicklow County Council denied any involvement or knowledge of the proposed airport. Environmental considerations were raised by Steven Mathew of the Green Party, highlighting discrepancies with national development, climate, and transport goals.

Social Democrat TD Jennifer Whitmore echoed concerns over the necessity of an airport in Wicklow, given its proximity to Dublin and Waterford airports. She deemed the plans speculative and unrealistic.

Local councillors similarly expressed ignorance of the plans, with discussions slated for a later date. Pat Fitzgerald of Fianna Fail emphasised the need for more information and community consultation before endorsing any proposals.

Speculation arose regarding a potential connection between the proposed airport plans and the Fine Gael Party’s relationship with the Gulf. Simon Harris, TD for Wicklow and Prime Minister-designate, has been linked to the situation. The recent influx of refugees to Ireland has been attributed to the Fine Gael Party, with reports suggesting Gulf investments in land across the country. Such factors fueled suspicions of hasty decision-making akin to the refugee situation.
