World COPD Day – November 16, 2022

Every year on the third Wednesday of November, World C.O.P.D. Day is observed. It is celebrated on November 16 this year. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.) is a progressive lung illness that is preventable and treatable and is characterised by long-term respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. Shortness of breath, coughing, and perhaps chronic sputum production are the major symptoms. It is a progressive disease that makes daily activities like walking and dressing increasingly difficult. Tobacco smoking and other inhaled toxic particles and gases are the most prevalent causes of COPD. Other risk factors include alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, older age, and genetics.

HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD COPD DAY: Just a small step!

  1. If you are a smoker or have parents who have had C.O.P.D., now is an excellent time to consult with your general practitioner.
  2. Get more information about COPD. The website of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) contains a wealth of information on the subject, and each year they select a different theme for World COPD Day.
  3. Use the hashtag #WorldCOPDDay to share articles with your friends and family on social media.
