Budget Announcement: Free Textbook Scheme to Extend to Leaving Cert Students

DUBLIN: The government has announced plans to extend the free textbook distribution programme to Leaving Certificate students as part of a broader initiative to alleviate education costs.

Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin revealed in the Dáil that free school books will now be provided to students preparing for their Leaving Cert. Prime Minister Simon Harris confirmed that a formal announcement regarding this extension will be included in the October budget. Harris emphasised that the government is committed to reducing education costs and supporting businesses.

The Prime Minister expressed pride in initiatives such as the free school books programme, the extension of the hot school meals scheme, the reduction of college fees, and the extension of parental leave. However, he acknowledged that there is more work to be done, noting that too many children in Ireland still live in poverty. To address this, Deputy Prime Minister Martin announced a €10 per month increase in child benefit payments.

Further initiatives aimed at supporting small businesses and the farming community, which are considered the backbone of society, will also be introduced. Prime Minister Harris highlighted the government’s recognition of their contributions to the country’s development, whether in rural or urban areas.

Addressing the ongoing issue of the high cost of living, Harris indicated that additional measures would be announced in the October budget. Finance Minister Michael McGrath has already confirmed that a substantial tax package will be included in the upcoming budget.
