European Travel Information and Authorisation System to Launch in 2025..

Brussels: As part of enhanced security measures within the European Union, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is set to be implemented by mid-next year. This online travel permit system has been under development since 2016 and is now nearing its launch.

ETIAS is an electronic system designed to manage entry permits for travellers to the EU. Similar systems are already in place in countries like the US, New Zealand, and Canada. Post-Brexit, the UK has also introduced its own electronic travel authorisation system.

Implementation Delays

Originally scheduled to launch in January 2021, the introduction of ETIAS has faced multiple delays. It was most recently planned to go live in November 2023, but this date was pushed back to 2024 without a formal announcement. Agencies such as Frontex and Europol have attributed the delays to EU Lisa, the agency responsible for the system’s implementation, and to member states’ failures to meet obligations, such as approving appeal process templates and developing data processing templates.

Scope and Requirements

ETIAS will affect approximately 1.4 billion people from 60 countries who currently travel to EU/Schengen countries on short-term visas. This includes travellers from countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen area. These travellers will need to obtain an online travel permit through ETIAS starting mid-May next year.

Application Process

Applicants will be able to apply through the official ETIAS website or mobile app. The process is estimated to take around ten minutes, during which travellers will need to upload their passport and photograph, and answer a few questions.

As ETIAS moves towards its launch, it aims to strengthen the security of the EU by pre-screening travellers before they arrive, thus enhancing border management and safety within the Schengen area.
