Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia wins bronze at Tokyo Olympics

TOKYO: Wrestler Bajrang Punia won bronze in the men’s 65kg category at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, giving India its sixth medal. The 27-year-old defeated Kazakhstan’s Daulat Niasbekov 8-0 in the repechage round.

If Bajrang’s overly defensive approach lost him the semi-final battle against Hazi Aliev, his smart attacking earned him a commendable victory over the Kazakhstan fighter.

Bajrang was not overjoyed with his bronze medal achievement since he was one of India’s top medal prospects this time. “I am not happy. This is not the result I had set out to achieve. Winning an Olympic medal is no mean achievement but I can’t jump with joy with bronze,” he said.

Bajrang’s bronze is India’s 7th medal in wrestling at the Olympics. He is the second Indian to win a medal in this edition after Ravi Kumar Dahiya.
