Microsoft Unveils Major AI Upgrades for Windows 11, Expanding Copilot’s Capabilities
Dublin: Microsoft has announced a significant round of AI-driven upgrades for Windows 11, aimed at enhancing the functionality of its Copilot assistant and solidifying its position in the growing AI assistant market.
The company described the move as ushering in “the era of truly working AI assistants”, capable of automating everyday tasks such as booking travel, making restaurant reservations, and ordering groceries.
With this update, Microsoft seeks to deepen user engagement by enabling seamless automation and connectivity across devices. The upgrades also reflect Microsoft’s intent to compete more aggressively with Google and Meta, both of which have recently integrated advanced AI assistants into their ecosystems of apps, devices, and browsers.
Industry analysts note that these enhancements mark the realisation of initiatives Microsoft first announced two years ago, now brought to market with greater maturity and integration.
Smarter Voice and Text Controls
The upgraded Copilot can now be activated with a simple voice command — “Hey Copilot” — allowing users to launch and control the assistant hands-free on Windows 11 PCs.
Microsoft also announced that Copilot Vision, the feature that allows the AI to analyse on-screen content and respond to related queries, will soon roll out globally. The company confirmed that a new text-based interaction mode for Vision will be released first to Windows Insiders, enabling users to switch between voice and text seamlessly.
New Copilot Actions Mode
One of the most notable additions is Copilot Actions Mode, an experimental feature that allows the assistant to book restaurant tables, order groceries, or schedule services directly from the desktop. Microsoft emphasised that the feature will only access user-authorised resources, ensuring privacy and control.
AI Comes to Gaming
In a parallel announcement, Microsoft introduced Xbox Ally, a new AI-powered gaming Copilot that offers players real-time tips, strategy recommendations, and technical support while they play.
“We are standing at the cusp of a major transformation,” said Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Chief Marketing Officer for Consumer Products. “Copilot will redefine how people interact with technology — it’s not just a tool but a partner that understands, assists, and acts.”
