Nepal-Tibet Flash Flood: Death Toll Rises to 359 as Rescue Efforts Continue

A devastating flash flood near the Nepal-China border has killed at least 359 people, with around 1,000 others reported missing after a suspected glacier collapse sent torrents of water, ice, rock and debris through mountain communities.

Rescue teams in Nepal are searching destroyed villages and debris-covered valleys, while helicopters are delivering essential supplies to communities cut off by damaged roads and bridges. Hundreds of foreign tourists are also among those missing on both sides of the border.

Authorities have warned of further flooding as debris-blocked rivers and rising lakes threaten to overflow. China has also reported significant water accumulation in a blocked lake near the affected area.

International assistance is being mobilised, with the US providing $500,000, India sending nearly 50 tonnes of relief supplies, and the World Bank considering up to 25 billion Nepalese rupees in emergency support. Médecins Sans Frontières has also deployed an emergency medical team to Nepal.
