Dublin: Ireland is preparing for a spell of cold winter weather, with a yellow fog warning issued for eight counties amid forecasts of reduced visibility, overnight frost and temperatures falling below freezing.
The warning covers counties in Connacht, along with Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan. It came into effect at 10pm on Monday and is due to remain in place until 10am on Tuesday.
Met Éireann has warned that dense fog could develop in affected areas, potentially creating hazardous driving conditions and causing travel disruption.
Motorists have been advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and take extra care, particularly during the early morning commute.
Temperatures could fall to -1°C
Weather Alerts Ireland has warned that cold conditions are likely to continue over the coming nights, with temperatures expected to fall to around 0°C or -1°C in some areas. The possibility of snow has also been mentioned in its latest social media update.
Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has separately warned that some parts of the country could experience dense fog overnight.
Cathal Nolan of the Ireland Weather Channel has also forecast freezing conditions in parts of Ireland, with overnight temperatures potentially dropping to between -1°C and -4°C.
Cloudier conditions are expected at times in eastern and southern areas, although much of the country is likely to experience relatively settled weather.
Mostly dry conditions expected for much of the week
High pressure is expected to keep conditions generally calm and dry across Ireland for most of the week.
By Wednesday, the high-pressure system is forecast to move across the North Sea towards the Shetland Islands, bringing colder easterly winds.
Cloud cover is likely to increase over the Irish Sea, with showers possible along the east coast and in parts of southern Munster. However, most areas are expected to remain dry.
Some rain possible on Thursday
There is a possibility of further showers on Thursday, particularly along the east coast and in some coastal areas of Munster. Elsewhere, conditions are expected to remain largely dry, with sunny spells and occasional cloud.
Friday is also forecast to bring little significant change. Although the high-pressure system is expected to weaken gradually, the weekend should see a mixture of sunshine and cloud, with some possibility of rain.
Frost, ice and possible snow next week
Despite the generally settled outlook, forecasters have warned that colder nights could bring frost, icy surfaces and the possibility of snow in some areas.
Cathal Nolan said more unsettled weather could develop next week. Kenneth of the Donegal Weather Channel also highlighted the risk of morning frost and ice, including frozen windscreens on vehicles.
Night-time temperatures could fall to around 0°C or -1°C, with the coldest conditions expected on clear nights. Fog is also possible, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday.
