Denmark’s vaccination program will continue without AstraZeneca vaccine

Denmark became the first European country to stop using the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. The decision to discontinue use of the AstraZeneca vaccine was announced on Wednesday because the vaccine is suspected of having rare but serious side effects.

Despite the World Health Organization’s and Europe’s medicines watchdog’s recommendations to continue using AstraZeneca, Danish Health Authority director Soren Brostrom said that Denmark’s vaccination roll-out program will proceed without the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Soren Brostrom says the country’s decision is “contextual” and it “may re-introduce the vaccine at a later date if the situation changes”.

“In Denmark, the majority of the population at risk has been vaccinated and the epidemic is under control,” Brostrom said.

Last week, the European Medicines Agency stated that it had found a possible link between the vaccine and very rare blood clot cases. But the EU’s drug watchdog says the risk of dying from COVID-19 is much higher than the rare side effects.

Denmark, which has stopped the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, has also halted the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as investigations into a possible link to rare blood clot cases continue.
