Dublin: Ireland’s unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in August, down from 4.8% in July, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). While the figure is slightly higher than the 4.1% recorded in August 2024, economists view the decline as a positive sign for the labour market, particularly amid ongoing global tariff uncertainty.
The unemployment rate for men eased to 4.9%, compared with 5% in July, while the female unemployment rate fell to 4.5%, down from 4.7% the previous month. By comparison, unemployment among women stood at 4.3% in August last year.
Youth unemployment also showed improvement, dropping to 11.9% in August from 12.1% in July.
In terms of overall numbers, the CSO reported 138,200 people unemployed in August, compared with 142,200 in July. This represents an increase of 19,600 compared with the same period last year.
Despite this, experts highlight that employment growth remains robust, with 63,900 more people employed in the second quarter of 2025 than a year earlier. Ireland’s unemployment rate also remains below the EU average, underscoring the relative strength of the domestic labour market.
