Snow and Ice Warnings Issued as Severe Cold Grips Ireland and Northern Ireland

Belfast: A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued across Northern Ireland as a spell of severe winter weather takes hold. The UK Met Office has placed counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry under alert, warning of hazardous conditions as temperatures continue to fall.

The Met Office said some areas could see snowfall today, with accumulations of 1–2 centimetres possible. Overnight temperatures are expected to range between -1°C and 3°C, increasing the risk of icy surfaces and difficult travel conditions.

While winter precipitation is forecast for Ulster, conditions in Munster are expected to remain largely dry. Met Éireann has indicated that the cold spell will persist into next week, with the lowest temperatures concentrated in the north and north-west of the country.

Extreme cold to dominate the weekend

Met Éireann has also warned that widespread ice and very cold conditions will continue across Ireland over the weekend. Forecasters say parts of the north and north-west may experience snowfall in the coming days, with the first weekend of the year set to deliver a true taste of winter.

Today will be notably cold, with maximum temperatures reaching just 2°C to 6°C. Morning rain in Munster is expected to clear southwards, allowing brighter conditions to develop, while other regions will see a mix of sunshine and showers. Northern counties are likely to experience sleet and snow, driven by moderate north-westerly winds.

Friday night is expected to bring widespread frost, with snow and fog developing in some areas. Although many places will remain dry and clear, there is a continued risk of snow showers in northern and north-western regions.

Saturday will begin cold, with lingering snow and ice gradually clearing through the day. Conditions are expected to improve, making it a largely dry day, though isolated showers may persist in the north and north-west. Temperatures are forecast to range again between 2°C and 6°C.

Cold conditions will return on Saturday night, with snow and ice redeveloping. Light rain is possible in the north and north-west. Forecasters say cold and wintry conditions will continue into Sunday and Monday, with snow and ice lingering in sheltered areas and a risk of isolated winter showers nationwide.
