Yellow Weather Alert Extended as Heavy Rain and Flood Risk Persist Across Ireland

Dublin: Met Éireann has warned that unsettled weather and further rainfall will continue across large parts of Ireland, prompting the extension of a status yellow rain alert for a further 24 hours from midnight. The warning applies to Dublin, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford.

Forecasters cautioned that, following intense rainfall earlier in the week, even moderate additional rain could trigger surface flooding and rising river levels due to already saturated ground conditions.

The latest warning comes amid criticism of the authorities’ response to Storm Chandra, with Housing Minister James Brown facing questions over the timeliness of public information during the severe weather event.

Tánaiste Simon Harris told a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting that new legislation will be introduced to classify flood relief schemes as critical infrastructure, allowing faster delivery. He also confirmed that financial supports for those affected by flooding have been activated.

A total of €625,000 has been allocated under the Business and Community Support Scheme, while Emergency Response Payments are available to households impacted in Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Louth and Monaghan.

Wexford County Council senior engineer Sinead Casey said the local authority remains on full alert ahead of further rainfall expected on Friday and Saturday. Additional sandbags have been stockpiled, while clean-up operations are under way as floodwaters recede. She confirmed that Enniscorthy’s quays and bridges have now reopened to traffic.

Met Éireann has faced criticism for not issuing a rain warning for Dublin ahead of the worst flooding, while warnings in neighbouring counties were also viewed as insufficient. In response, the agency said weather alerts are based primarily on forecast rainfall totals and do not currently factor in pre-existing ground saturation, which can significantly increase flood risk.
